Dorothy Adams
Strategic Advisor

Dorothy Adams is an investor, professional board director and advisor to companies. She has extensively researched the governance best practices for companies backed by private equity and venture capital, making her alert to the potential pitfalls of private company boards. With more than a decade of investing experience, she has reviewed hundreds of investment possibilities in Europe and the US and knows the range of issues that can make or break an organization’s success. She is an active member of several angel investor groups, including River Valley Investors of Massachusetts and the Wharton Alumni Investor Network of New York. Her advisory work includes board evaluation, facilitation of strategic planning as well as conflict resolution for boards, management and investors. She has an M.B.A. with distinction from the Wharton School and prior to that was a manufacturing technology expert for a research agency. She has a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering cum laude from Princeton University. Dorothy is fluent in Dutch and holds the Dutch as well as American nationality and now resides in Connecticut. In addition to serving on the board of the Stamford chapter of the Connecticut Venture Group, she is an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and serves on the board of the Dispute Settlement Center Inc. and on the advisory board of the Healthy Children’s program of the Strang Cancer Prevention Institute. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of boards of venture-backed companies, has published in Directors & Boards, and has a blog on the subject of investing and boards.

Bruce Albert
Strategic Advisor

Bruce Albert formed Applegate Seven in January 2007 to provide strategic, operational and M&A counsel to marketing communications and media technology companies. He is an advisor to Kaleidocope/Interpublic, RPost, Eleven SA, globefish and Progress Partners. He is also a volunteer advisor leading a team to establish Gilda’s Club Enterprises, a for-profit division charged with generating unrestricted funds for this non-profit organization that provides social and emotional support to people living with cancer and their families. Bruce applies diverse strategic and operating experience gathered at Doyle Dane Bernbach, the Dick Lord Agencies and Kaleidoscope/Interpublic to build brands and businesses. Throughout his career, he has maintained a balance of line and staff management responsibilities, and worked directly with senior level clients to address positioning challenges, create integrated marketing solutions, and develop best practices and accountability metrics. Bruce has played leading roles in business development, M&A, forming and reengineering agencies, and executing market entry strategies, domestically and abroad. His work on multi-national brands in the U.K., Europe and Japan during the 1980’s and 90’s, and recently in Europe and China, has enabled Bruce to provide global clients with country-specific and pan-regional intelligence and perspectives critical to generating attributable, incremental sales and strong returns on marketing investments.

John Brooke
Strategic Advisor
John Brooke is experienced in every aspect of the venture process. He currently manages a family fund of investments called Brooke Private Equity Advisors in Boston. John was the fifth employee at Advent International, a leading global private equity firm with 20 offices worldwide and more than $6B in managed capital. He spent 15 years at AI, where he ran the Far East Group in Singapore, managed the associates/analyst programs in Boston, and led early stage technology investing and later stage buyout investing. His results were consistent with all partners - a net exceeding 40 percent. John's family remains AI's largest single shareholder. Upon his return from Asia, Mr. Brooke joined The Tucker Anthony Private Equity Group (Park Street Capital) and helped establish it as a leading private equity fund-of-funds management company with in excess of $800 million under management. Park Street Capital manages a series of fund of funds for institutions and families. Mr. Brooke was responsible for fund access, fund raising, fund oversight and management. Brooke earned his MBA at Harvard.

Michael Frank
Venture Capital Advisor

Michael Frank was most recently a General Partner at Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV) where he focused on the software, Internet infrastructure and communications market segments. While at ATV, Mr. Frank was an investor in and Board member of a number of companies including BizLand, CopperCom, DataSage (acquired by Vignette), eGrad, Fact City, iConverse, Linx Communications, NewMediary, Sound Vision, WebLine Communications (acquired by Cisco Systems), WorldStreet, and Xevo. Mr. Frank has over 22 years of operational, management consulting and investment experience with emerging growth and technology companies. Before joining ATV, he was co-founder and vice president of marketing for Fluent, a multimedia systems software company that was purchased by Novell. Prior to this, Mr. Frank was Group Marketing Manager, Financial Services, at Apollo Computer (now Hewlett-Packard) and a Development Engineer at Tencor Instruments (now KLA Tencor). Mr. Frank holds a BS and an MS in mechanical engineering, a BA in psychology, and an MBA, all from Stanford University.

Jean Hammond
Angel/Seed Round Advisor

Jean Hammond is a successful serial entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in the high-tech industry. She currently consults to and invests in, early stage high tech start-ups. An active investor, she adds market research and product management staffing as needed to fully assess the opportunity. As an entrepreneur, she founded Quarry Technologies with a team from the GTE Internetworking / BBN Technologies SuperRouter project and served as startup CEO and on the Board of Directors. Jean co-founded AXON Networks, a developer of network management applications. Following 3Com's acquisition of AXON, Jean was responsible for 3Com's WAN strategy. Jean earned an M.S. from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a B.S. from Boston University.

Eric Healy

Eric Healy is Executive Vice President, Network Director at Isobar, providing high level strategy and relationship management services to global, North American based clients. At Isobar, Eric is responsible for cross unit integration across its’ 43 agencies, 94 offices and 42 countries where he also serves in a corporate development function for acquisitions. Prior to Isobar, Eric served as Senior Vice President, Director of Mullen Interactive. At Arnold Worldwide, Eric managed the $270 million Vonage account, and led the agency’s Interactive practice. Eric’s past employment includes Vice President, Strategy Group at Digitas. A native to the footwear industry, Eric also served as founding Director of eCommerce and Global Direct Marketing at Reebok International Limited. Eric’s past experience also includes a wide range of emerging technology and marketing services consultation for local start-ups and venture firms including Cirrus Wireless, Quatrro Wireless, Highland Capital, Orchid Partners and Common Angels. Eric is an active board member for a wireless company, Mobot, Inc. and a viral marketing provider, HypeCouncil and also serves as a capital advisor for Progress Partners. Eric holds dual Master of Science degrees in Management and Marketing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst . He is a member of many leading technology and venture organizations including New England Venture Association, New England Venture Network and the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange.

Eric Janszen
Strategic Advisor

Eric Janszen is Founder and Chief Prognosticator of iTulip, Inc. (www.itulip.com) a heavily trafficked site devoted to the "contrary market view." Most recently, Eric was President and CEO of AutoCell. Prior to that, he worked as an entrepreneur-in-residence for a venture capital firm Trident Capital. From 2001 to 2004, Eric served as President & CEO of Bluesocket, Inc., a leading Wi-Fi systems vendor. Before Bluesocket, he was Managing Director of Osborn Capital LLC, where he managed a portfolio of 20 technology startups. A graduate of UMass, Amherst, Eric serves on the Board of the Massachusetts Network Communications Council and has been the subject of numerous articles and profiles in the business and technology media, notably The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Boston Globe and the BBC.

Ham Lord
Angel/Seed Round Advisor

Hambleton (Ham) Lord has over 20 years experience in the software industry, where he co-founded three software companies. Currently, Ham is the Managing Director of Launchpad Venture Group. Launchpad is a Boston-based angel group that focuses on seed stage technology companies. He manages the group's deal flow, due diligence and investing activities. Ham is an active angel investor and advisor to early stage software companies. He serves on the boards of three startup companies - Building Engines, JAM Technologies and Mok3. Ham's senior management experience was in the software industry, most recently as co-founder and Vice President of Marketing for Advanced Visual Systems (AVS). AVS develops software for scientists and engineers involved in applications such as Medical Imaging, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Engineering Analysis and Oil & Gas Exploration. AVS was acquired by Muse Technologies in 2000. Prior to AVS, Ham was co-founder of two Bio-Informatics companies, MicroChem Technologies and Polygen. Both of these companies were pioneers in the development of software for drug discovery, and were part of an industry wide acquisition roll-up that resulted in the Accelyrs division of Pharmacopeia. Ham is a trustee of the Cape Cod Conservatory. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in computer science from Brown University.

Dan Miller

Dan Miller, is the Managing Partner of Startup Florida, LLC, founder of Biz Tank, LLC, and formerly President of Movo Mobile, LLC, which was acquired by Neighborhood America in October, 2006.  Dan has helped scores of entrepreneur’ to start-up, organize, systemize, grow and exit their businesses.  With his diverse background as an entrepreneur, investor, advisor and athlete, Dan has become a well known speaker and expert on using technology and people to make companies more efficient and competitive.  In 1981 he represented the US in the Maccabiah Games in Venezuela and Israel and he also trained with West Ham United of the English Professional League.  He is now a 2nd Degree Black Belt and Instructor of Tae-Kwon-Do, as well as a competitive club tennis player.  Dan graduated with a BA from Brandeis University in the Boston area.  He completed the “Birthing of Giants” entrepreneurial education program sponsored by MIT, Inc. Magazine and the Young Entrepreneurs Organization (YEO).  Dan was an active member, and also a former President, of Boston YEO.  In Sarasota, Florida, Dan facilitates a monthly CEO Peer Group of early-stage entrepreneurs.  Dan is the Chairman of Pongo Software, an ecommerce provider of resume and career software and serves on the Advisory Boards of Synthenet Corp., Real Digital Media LLC, 82Degrees Tech, the Sarasota County Economic Development Corporation, and the Sarasota County Tourism Economic Development Board.

Patrick Rafter
Public Relations/Marketing Advisor

Patrick Rafter has been active, for the past 25 years, from Boston to Silicon Valley; from Washington, D.C to Europe, managing communications for a range of technology leaders including Intel's Expound, Disney's toysmart.com, Autodesk's American Information Exchange, and Aldus. Currently, he serves as an independent consultant in media and communications for top technology firms. Most recently Vice President of Marketing and Communications for AutoCell, Patrick spent four years as VP of Communications at Bluesocket, Inc., whose systems secure Wi-Fi networks in 40+ countries. As VP at Schwartz Communications, he directed publicity for emerging companies including SpeechWorks, eRoom & Pervasive Software. At toysmart.com, he helped build brand recognition from 0-to-40% in 6 months by securing over 1,000 print articles and extensive TV coverage. Patrick serves on the Boards of Nantucket Conference on Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and the Partners' Research Accelerator (bio-med fundraising) and holds a BA (cum laude) from Tufts University.

John Roland
Strategic Advisor

John Roland is a serial entrepreneur and was most recently the President & COO of FastChannel Network, Inc.  A venture-backed, software company, John oversaw the growth of FastChannel from startup to $25 million in sales with 200 employees.  As the technology leader, FastChannel was attractive to and merged with DG Systems for $40 million to solidify its position as the leading provider of advertising distribution services.  The merger was approved by the SEC in May 2006 and is a public concern (FINRAADQ: DGIT).  Prior to FastChannel, John was the President and Co-Founder of Genesis Business Systems, Inc.  Genesis, a software company, was built from the startup phase without venture capital and was sold to Achieve Healthcare Systems in 1996 to form the leading provider of long-term care automation systems. 

Alex Wilmerding
Strategic Advisor

Alex Wilmerding is a director at The Citigroup Private Bank in Boston, MA.  Wilmerding has over 19 years of experience, primarily in venture and private equity investing and corporate and business development.  Prior to Citigroup Private Bank, he was a partner at Boston Capital Ventures.  He was responsible for investing in and advising companies that provided technology solutions to the travel, hospitality, financial services, real estate, retail, transportation and distribution industries.  Prior to this, he managed business and operations project in Shanghai and Southeast Asia for Fednav Limited.  In addition, he held four executive management positions with Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragon Airlines, subsidiaries of the Swire Group.  Having lived in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia for six years, Alex is fluent in Mandarin.  Alex earned a BA degree in history from Yale University and an MBA in finance and organizational management from the Columbia Business School.  He is the author of two books, Deal Terms and Term Sheets and Valuations.  He also sits on the board of family office, Charles Pratt and Company and Dosoris Trust Company, and is Trustee and Officer of the Yale-China Association.
